Beyond the Basics: Understanding Cigar Shapes and Sizes

Walk into a humidor and you’ll see hundreds of options. Cigars aren't just "big" or "small." The size and shape, known technically as the Vitola, drastically change the smoking experience.

Length and Ring Gauge

Cigars are measured by length (in inches) and ring gauge (diameter). Ring gauge is measured in 1/64ths of an inch. A standard "Robusto" is typically 5 x 50, meaning it is 5 inches long and 50/64 inches thick.

Why does this matter?

  • Time: A longer cigar burns longer. Don't light a 7-inch Churchill if you only have 30 minutes.

  • Flavor Ratio: A thin cigar has less filler tobacco, so the wrapper leaf (which often holds 60% of the flavor) plays a much bigger role. A thick cigar has more "filler" to cool the smoke, often making it smoother.

Common Vitolas for Beginners

  • Robusto (5 x 50): The gold standard. Short, thick, and typically a 45-60 minute smoke. It’s the perfect test size for a new blend.

  • Corona (5.5 x 42): The classic proportion. Because it is thinner, it burns a bit hotter and delivers flavor intensity.

  • Toro (6 x 50): Like a Robusto, but an inch longer. Great for when you have an hour or more to relax.

  • Gordo (6 x 60): These "thick" cigars have become very popular. They burn very cool and offer a massive volume of smoke, which many beginners enjoy.
